From the Help Desk to the Boardroom: My Journey in Technology
Where It Started
My career in technology began the way many do — on the phones. As a Help Desk Analyst at Clinical Labs Pathology and later a Technical Support Specialist at Telstra, I learned the fundamentals that still shape how I work today: how to listen to a frustrated stakeholder, diagnose a problem under pressure, and follow through until it's actually resolved. Troubleshooting network faults, walking users through Active Directory issues, coordinating activations across national teams — it wasn't glamorous, but it taught me discipline, patience, and the value of a well-run process.
Learning the Craft of Infrastructure
From there, I moved into hands-on infrastructure and systems administration, spending nearly five years at Thomas Duryea Logicalis inside an ITIL-based managed services environment. I supported Exchange, Active Directory, and Office 365 environments; managed backups across Veeam, Commvault, and Avamar; and untangled everything from VMware issues to Citrix session failures. It was here that I built a genuine appreciation for the invisible plumbing that keeps organisations running — and for how much good vendor and licensing management can save a business.
That foundation carried into my time at Pentana Solutions, where I spent over three years broadening into cloud. I ran early AWS migration projects, planned Office 365 rollouts, implemented Sophos security protections, and managed storage infrastructure across HP Nimble platforms — all while supporting international offices and juggling the demands of a growing, security-conscious environment.
Specialising in Cloud and Security
As cloud adoption accelerated, so did my focus. At Civica and RMIT University, I led domain and server migrations, implemented SIEM tooling with Symantec and ELK stack, and built out monitoring with Grafana and Prometheus. At RMIT specifically, I managed a large-scale storage migration — moving terabytes of data across data centres without loss — and automated VM management across on-prem and AWS environments.
My time at FitzIT sharpened this further. I led full AWS migration projects end-to-end: gathering requirements, running infrastructure assessments, delivering proof-of-concepts, and executing production cutovers. I set up entire AWS organisations from scratch — accounts, VPCs, IAM policies, security guardrails — and reviewed client architectures against the AWS Well-Architected Framework. This was where I stopped thinking purely as an engineer and started thinking as someone accountable for the success of the whole initiative.
Taking on Bigger Programs
At Interactive, my responsibilities expanded into project and vendor management — running change approval processes, managing project budgets, timelines and team tasks, and negotiating directly with vendors on infrastructure upgrades and decommissioning. Backup and disaster recovery platforms (Veeam One, Commvault) came with me, but the emphasis had clearly shifted: I was now managing the delivery, not just the technology.
That shift became explicit at Peninsula Health, where I delivered a Health & Safety application upgrade project across a live health sector environment — coordinating both technical and business stakeholders to ensure a compliant, minimal-disruption rollout. Alongside that, I strengthened the organisation's security posture through vulnerability management, domain password audits, and modern access control tooling, while also handling enterprise application deployments and file infrastructure migrations to Azure.
Governance, Critical Infrastructure, and Leadership
At 1JSK, I stepped further into governance. I designed and implemented a full Service Integration and Management (SIAM) framework for a client — establishing governance structures, vendor accountability models, and integration processes across multiple providers. I also developed incident response processes specifically for critical infrastructure disruption, extending well beyond standard IT incident handling into availability and safety-critical scenarios. Around a year of this engagement was with an energy sector client, which planted the seed for where my career was heading next.
Most recently, as Infrastructure Lead at Equip Super, I held end-to-end accountability for a full infrastructure environment — data centres, cloud platforms, networks, end-user computing, and more — while ensuring compliance against frameworks like CPS 234/230 and NIST. I led on-site teams, managed vendor contracts and invoicing, and automated change approval workflows to keep governance tight without slowing delivery down.
Where I Am Today
Nearly two decades on from that first help desk role, my focus has evolved from keeping systems running to leading the programs that transform them — with a particular focus on critical infrastructure and the energy sector, where the stakes of getting governance, risk, and delivery right are especially high. The thread that connects all of it, from Telstra to today, hasn't changed: understand the problem properly, bring the right people together, and see it through.
